Oppression harms wellness: Using the Healing Ethno-Racial Trauma (HEART) therapeutic intervention in clinical practice
Oppression harms people's wellness, an assertion increasingly recognized in the health sciences and supported by empirical evidence. However, less attention has been placed on therapeutic approaches, explicitly addressing the role of systemic oppression on people's mental health. This presentation aims to contribute to the professional discourse on the connection between wellness and oppression. Two goals guide the talk. First, the author will introduce the concept of ethno-racial trauma and outline how the notion overlaps and diverges from traditional forms of trauma as a prelude to presenting the Healing Ethno-Racial Trauma (HEART) therapeutic intervention. This newer theoretical framework considers systemic mental health concerns of minoritized people and is designed to support clients' self-determination, foster hope, and cultivate resistance as a process of healing from oppression. The presentation will conclude with recommendations for ways to use HEART in clinical practice.
