Network for theoretical and philosophical psychology

We are a group of researchers from different research areas within psychology united by a common concern with general philosophical and methodological issues regarding how psychological science is and should be done. The purpose of this network is to provide a forum for critical exchange of ideas, to facilitate cooperation, and to stimulate greater appreciation of the role of theoretical work in psychology.

What is theoretical and philosophical psychology?

Theoretical and philosophical psychology is not focused on a particular theory or subject matter. Rather, it is concerned with general theoretical and conceptual issues and meta-theoretical assumptions that guide theory construction and research, thus covering a broad and heterogeneous range of work.

This includes:

  1. analysis of concepts, such as ‘psychological illness’, ‘personality’, and ‘quantitative-qualitative research’, which are crucial to psychological research,
  2. analysis of the presuppositions underlying research programs from historical and sociological perspectives and critical, normative discussion of their appropriateness,
  3. analysis of the relations between different theories and concepts, especially with the ambition to integrate them, and analysis of their relations to empirical data, and
  4. discussion of classical philosophical issues that are particularly pertinent to psychological theory and research and possibly illuminated by empirical results, regarding, for example, consciousness, agency, language, theory reduction, forms of explanation, and so on.
