Is ego depletion a true effect? Attempts for replication and theoretical integration
In this dissertation, I first describe the birth, boom, and death of the famous ego depletion effect in current psychology. I then report how we used meta-analytical tools and pre-registered studies to investigate whether ego depletion is a true effect, and how the data suggests that a rebirth of the effect is possible.
Further, the available explanations of the findings are discussed, and based on that a new explanation integrating various lines of research is introduced. I also show how our most recent empirical findings support this new model.
