Influence your education - become a student representative!

As a student representative at the Department of Psychology, you can make your voice and those of your fellow students heard by exercising influence and affecting your education. You get insight into course syllabi, reading lists, pedagogy, gender equality, work and study environments, the quality of education and much more. You may also participate in meetings with, for example, management groups or the departmental board and therefore become an important link between students and management. Being a student representative is a fun and stimulating way to gain a larger network, invaluable knowledge and experience that you can use to further your career.

What do you gain from being a student representative?

In addition to great opportunities to influence your education, being a student representative gives you many valuable experiences that you can take with you in your future working life. As a student representative, you will gain insights into how government agencies work, work processes, board work, and rights and regulations. At the end of your assignment as a student representative, you will receive a personal, meritorious certificate that is excellent to have when looking for a job or other qualified assignments after the programme.

What do student representatives mean for the department?

For the department, student representatives are very important and necessary to be able to gather thoughts and opinions that contribute to maintaining good quality education and continued development. By conducting an active dialogue and listening to the student representatives, By engaging in active dialogue and listening to student representatives, the department can more easily drive democratic processes while also safeguarding students' rights.

How to become a student representative?

You apply, via the Social Sciences Student Union’s website, to become one. The Student Union then reviews the applications and selects a suitable candidate. New student representatives are elected in the spring, during the General Council meeting. If you are elected as a student representative, your assignment is for the next academic year, one year ahead. For example, if you are elected in June 2024, you will serve as a student representative until June 2025.

By-elections

If there are positions that are still vacant after the meeting of the General Council, it is possible to fill them afterwards through a so-called by-election. Then the Union decides during its board meetings who is elected as a student representative. If you are elected as a student representative through a by-election, you hold the position until the end of the spring semester of the following year

Student Council

All student representatives become members of the student council. The task of the student council is to discuss together what happens at the institution and what you want to change. The Student Council is also an excellent place to seek answers to your questions.

Being a student representative gives you insight, knowledge and the opportunity to influence the work of the board and working groups. Below we list the various boards, working groups and committees where you may be elected as a student representative.

The work environment committee prepares and monitors the ongoing work environment management.

The facilities committee prepares matters concerning premises and coordinates the practical management of offices and teaching premises.

Committee for Equality and Diversity takes stock of, monitors and provides information on matters concerning gender equality, equal opportunities and diversity.

The course syllabus group works on reviewing and commenting on all the course syllabi on which the department board is to take a decision. Language requirements: Swedish

The departmental board decides on the guidelines for the department’s activities and use of resources. It follows up activities at the department, analyses results and ensures that resources are used efficiently. The board also decides on matters delegated to the board.

The board consists of the head of department, five teaching staff members, one TA staff member and two student representatives. The directors of studies and the deputy head of department have the right to make statements, but not to vote.
